City of Radford experiencing internet outage after possible ‘data incident’

The City of Radford is experiencing an internet outage due to a possible “data incident.”

Official response and confirmed impact

The city posted about the incident on Facebook around 7:30 Tuesday night. According to the city’s post, the incident impacted various city departments.

A statement from the city posted on social media reads, “We want you to know that the City takes information security seriously and is taking steps to strengthen our security posture and protect City data.”

All office emails and most phone lines are not available at this time. 911 and the non-emergency communication center are available.

Radford Transit and the sheriff’s office are not affected.

Incident under investigation

City leaders said as soon as they became aware, they immediately engaged cybersecurity professionals, legal counsel and state and federal law enforcement to investigate and fix the problem.
