Trespasser fatally struck by NJ Transit train in Plainfield

NJ Transit’s Raritan Valley Line was suspended Friday morning after a train fatally struck a trespasser in Plainfield.

The incident happened at about 5:40 a.m. on the Raritan Valley Line.

According to an NJ Transit spokesperson, Train 5406 departed Raritan at 5:09 a.m. and was scheduled to arrive at Newark Penn Station at 6:08 a.m.

When the train reached the Plainfield station, it “struck and fatally injured a trespasser,” officials said.

None of the crew members or the 40 passengers aboard the train were injured, the spokesperson said.

The victim’s identity has not been released.

Service on the Raritan Valley Line was initially suspended in both directions but later resumed with delays. NJ Transit Police are investigating.
