Washington Parish School Board approves plan to move Mount Hermon students

The Washington Parish School Board voted Thursday (Sept. 24) to move 140 students from Mount Hermon to nearby schools.

Official response and confirmed impact

The proposal directly affects students in grades seven through 12.

Families have threatened to move out of the area or homeschool all of their children in response.

Parents, teachers, students and other community members spent an hour before the vote pleading with board members to table the proposal.

They said the parish has not provided enough research to prove the merger would benefit students, families and teachers.

Community members raised concerns about students’ safety, mental health and education. There is also concern over student involvement in sports and clubs.

Parents said longer commute times could prevent participation. Out of nine board members, only one opposed the vote.
