3 people spotted climbing out of NYC sewer on Upper East Side, investigation underway

New York City authorities are investigating after three people were spotted climbing out of a sewer on Manhattan’s Upper East Side early Wednesday morning.

Police responded at about 4:35 a.m. near 535 Park Avenue at East 61st Street, where the three individuals were seen emerging from the sewer before leaving the area in two vehicles and heading north on Park Avenue.

Emergency crews inspected the underground system and found nothing suspicious, while the Department of Environmental Protection said the sewer infrastructure was safe.

The NYPD said additional security sweeps were being conducted with federal partners out of an abundance of caution, particularly as heightened security remains in place during the United Nations General Assembly.

No arrests have been announced, and investigators are working to determine why the individuals entered the sewer system.
