2026 NFL Draft No. 1 Pick Fernando Mendoza Waits as Raiders Open Season With Win

Fernando Mendoza, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, began his highly anticipated NFL career from the sideline as the Las Vegas Raiders opened their season with a 27-13 victory over the Miami Dolphins.

The Raiders chose veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins to start Week 1, leaving Mendoza as the backup despite the enormous expectations surrounding the reigning Heisman Trophy winner and former Indiana star.

Mendoza became the first quarterback selected No. 1 overall since Baker Mayfield in 2018 to not start his team’s season opener, making the Raiders’ quarterback situation one of the most closely watched storylines surrounding the 2026 rookie class.

Cousins guided Las Vegas to the season-opening victory, although he also threw two interceptions. The Raiders produced 130 rushing yards and controlled possession for nearly 35 minutes while their defense recorded five sacks and forced two turnovers.

Raiders coach Klint Kubiak has not announced a timetable for turning the offense over to the 2026 NFL Draft’s top selection. For now, Cousins remains the starter while Mendoza develops behind the veteran.

Las Vegas next travels to face the Los Angeles Chargers on September 20, giving Mendoza another week to prepare as speculation over his NFL debut continues.
