Highway 1 reopens through Big Sur after weeks of wildfire closures

Caltrans officials said Highway 1 had reopened after portions of it were shuttered for weeks as a result of wildfires in the Big Sur area.
Highway 1 fully reopened Monday, ending more than a month of wildfire-related closures that cut off one of California’s most scenic coastal drives.
A 10-mile stretch of the highway first closed on Aug. 11 as the Timber Fire spread through Monterey County. The closure expanded to 40 miles on Aug.
27, after a second Monterey County blaze, the Plaskett Fire, erupted.
