Flood Watch Issued for New York City as Heavy Rain Threatens Overnight Flash Flooding

A Flood Watch is in effect for New York City from 2 a.m. to 10 a.m. Sunday, with heavy downpours expected overnight and the greatest concern focused on low-lying, flood-prone and below-grade areas.

Residents living in basement apartments or homes that have flooded before are being urged to prepare before going to sleep Saturday night.

Basement residents urged to have an escape plan

Anyone living below ground should know how to reach a higher floor or another safe location quickly if water begins entering the building.

Residents should never remain in or re-enter a flooded basement, as rapidly rising water can become life-threatening within minutes.

Move valuables and clear drains

New Yorkers are advised to move important documents, electronics and other valuables off basement floors and away from areas where water could enter.

Residents can also clear nearby catch basins where it is safe to do so or report blocked drains to 311.

Keep emergency alerts on overnight

Because flooding could develop while people are sleeping, residents should keep phones charged, emergency alerts enabled and notification volumes turned up.

Basement apartment residents are especially encouraged to register for New York City’s dedicated flood alerts, which can provide automated phone warnings during dangerous conditions.

Drivers and pedestrians should never attempt to cross flooded streets. Even shallow-looking floodwater can hide dangerous currents, open manholes and other hazards.
