Not guilty plea entered for suspect accused

MADISON, Iowa — MADISON, Wis. (WKOW) — An Iowa man accused of shooting another person at a Fourth of July barbecue in Madison appeared in court Thursday.

Victims and police response

According to a criminal complaint, Woods shot a man, identified as AWJ, during an argument over car keys.

Madison police officers responded to the home on Tucson Trail shortly after 8:50 p.m. and found a man on the garage floor with a gunshot wound to his left leg.

Medical staff determined AWJ had a broken femur with the bullet still lodged inside.

AWJ told police he was at his neighbor's barbecue when he tried to stop a woman and her two children from leaving because he thought they were too intoxicated to drive.

AWJ said he took their car keys, which led to an argument with two women, and he says they started hitting him.

Shooting investigation

Brian Woods, 19, of Davenport, IA, is charged with first-degree reckless injury and use of a dangerous weapon.

Counsel entered a not guilty plea on Woods' behalf, according to court records. Woods appeared in court by phone. His bail was continued.
