GRIDCo attributes widespread power outage to faulty Akosombo: Latest Details
The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has attributed the widespread power outage recorded across parts of the country on Thursday, August 20, 2026, to a major fault on the Akosombo–Volta transmission line.
GRIDCo said the fault occurred at about 4:30 a.m., triggering the automatic shutdown of the Akosombo generating units and some thermal power plants. According to the company, the automatic shutdown was a protective measure designed to safeguard the stability and integrity of the National Interconnected Transmission System.
The incident disrupted electricity supply to several communities in Accra and other parts of the country. GRIDCo said its engineers, working alongside other power sector agencies, immediately isolated the affected transmission line and began the process of safely restoring power to affected areas.
