update: significant earthquake of magnitude 5.6 just reported 75 miles southwest of Eureka, California, USs
An earthquake of magnitude 5.6 occurred only 16 minutes ago 75 miles southwest of Eureka, California, United States, the United States Geological Survey reported.
The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 1.3 miles beneath the epicenter near Eureka, Humboldt County, California, USA, in the morning on Sunday, May 21st, 2023, at 10:44 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.5. Other agencies reporting the same quake include France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) at magnitude 5.0, The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) at magnitude 5.4, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.6, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.0.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Ferndale (pop. 1,400) located 65 miles from the epicenter, Fortuna (pop. 12,000) 71 miles away, Humboldt Hill (pop. 3,400) 72 miles away, Rio Dell (pop. 3,400) 73 miles away, Pine Hills (pop. 3,100) 74 miles away, Eureka (pop. 27,000) 75 miles away, Arcata (pop. 17,800) 80 miles away, Bayside (pop. 17,100) 81 miles away, and McKinleyville (pop. 15,200) 82 miles away.
