Burundi agrees to accept US deportees with no previous ties to country

Burundi has agreed to accept migrants deported from the United States even if they have no previous connection to the East African country, according to presidential spokesperson Nancy Ninette Mutoni.

Mutoni said Burundi would accept only deportees who are not facing criminal charges and have no links to terrorism.

The government has not disclosed how many people it will receive or when the first deportees are expected to arrive.

The agreement is part of the United States’ broader use of third-country deportations, under which some migrants can be removed to countries where they are neither citizens nor previous residents.

Burundian authorities said preparations are being made to receive those sent under the arrangement.
