Flash Flood Emergency issued for Hatch Valley, New Mexico as evacuations begin

A Flash Flood Emergency has been issued for the Hatch Valley in New Mexico as dangerous flooding threatens communities in northwestern Doña Ana County.

Emergency management officials reported that several retention dams are near capacity and intense runoff is flowing through the area, prompting evacuations around Hatch. The emergency also affects areas including Salem, Garfield and Rincon

The National Weather Service warned of life-threatening flash flooding and urged anyone in threatened low-lying areas to move to higher ground immediately.

The Flash Flood Emergency is in effect until 8:45 p.m. MDT Tuesday.
