Magnitude 5.4 earthquake strikes near Pangai, Tonga

A magnitude 5.4 earthquake struck near Pangai, Tonga, early Wednesday, September 30.

The earthquake was recorded about 99 km south-southeast of Pangai at approximately 1:40 a.m. local time, with a reported depth of 10 km.

The quake occurred beneath the South Pacific in the seismically active Tonga region. Initial seismic data may be revised as monitoring agencies review the event.
