Chatham County Sheriff calls for gang unit after recent shootings

Police are investigating a Saturday night shooting in downtown Savannah near West Bay Street, where witnesses reported hearing dozens of gunshots in a busy area popular with tourists.

Savannah police said officers responded to a parking lot near Bay Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard after receiving multiple ShotSpotter alerts.

Witnesses described a heavy police presence.

“When my fiancé and I got to the hotel, our window was open, and we noticed this couple dozen kids out in the parking lot, and it didn't look like it is necessarily a friendly altercation,” said visitor Rocky Morgan.
