Officer Down After Gunfight In Indiana
New Albany, IN – A New Albany police officer was shot on Monday morning while responding to a 911 call from a woman who told dispatchers that a man was shooting at her.
The incident occurred at about 11:30 a.m. on May 30 near 14th and Market streets in New Albany, WHAS reported.
Police put out an alert with a picture of the suspect and asked the public not to approach him.
When officers finally spotted the gunman, a brief foot chase ensued.
Officials said the suspect opened fire on officers who were pursuing him, WHAS reported.
One New Albany police officer was shot.
That officer returned fire and shot the suspect, according to WHAS.
The wounded hero and the suspect were both transported to the hospital for treatment of gunshot wounds.
Officials have not yet released any details on their medical conditions, WHAS reported.
Authorities also have not yet identified the officer to the public.
Indiana State Police (ISP) are heading up the investigation into the officer-involved shooting, WHAS reported.
