William Mullins McLeod Jr. arrest

In a shocking turn of events, South Carolina gubernatorial candidate William Mullins McLeod Jr was arrested in downtown Charleston while wearing only his underwear and shoes. Dashcam footage captures McLeod, 53, shouting incoherently, using profanities, and claiming to be “God” and “Superman.” The incident occurred in May but has resurfaced following McLeod’s recent announcement to run for governor.

Erratic Behavior and Arrest Details

According to the Charleston Police Department, McLeod was found near King Street and Murray Boulevard, yelling loudly and behaving erratically. Officers reported signs consistent with stimulant drug use, including bloodshot and dilated eyes. Despite attempts to identify him, McLeod refused to provide his name, instead referring to himself as “Superman” and “God.” He also threatened to “kick teeth in” of perceived rivals and resisted exiting the patrol car upon arrival at the jail.

Democratic Party Responds

The South Carolina Democratic Party expressed concern over McLeod’s actions. Party Chair Christale Spain issued a statement urging McLeod to focus on his mental and emotional well-being instead of continuing his gubernatorial campaign. Spain emphasized that the people of South Carolina deserve leaders who can maintain composure and judgment.

McLeod’s Defense and Campaign Outlook

In response to the incident, McLeod has defended his actions, claiming that his arrest was unlawful and that the released footage was intended to damage his reputation. He stated that he looks forward to addressing the situation and focusing on the real issues facing the state. Despite the controversy, McLeod remains in the race for governor, positioning himself as a candidate for change in South Carolina.
