Tragedy in Texas: Soccer Coach Reece Zunker and Wife Confirmed Dead in Devastating Guadalupe River Floods

Kerrville, Texas – Beloved local soccer coach Reece Zunker and his wife Paula have been confirmed among the at least 52 victims of the catastrophic flooding that continues to devastate central Texas. Their two young children remain missing, as search and rescue efforts continue along the swollen Guadalupe River.
The couple’s deaths were confirmed by family members and the local soccer community on social media, with one relative stating their home was seen “floating down the Guadalupe River” after the waters surged early on the Fourth of July.

Wall of Water Strikes Without Warning
Historic rainfall led to a flash flood disaster when the Guadalupe River rose more than 26 feet in just 45 minutes, inundating multiple communities with little warning. The National Weather Service initially described the storms as “moderate,” only issuing a flash flood warning at 1:00 a.m. Friday and upgrading to a Flash Flood Emergency at 4:30 a.m.—hours after water had already reached homes.
Residents have voiced outrage, questioning the delay in warnings, especially since the first alert came only at 1:18 p.m. on July 3, long after many homes had already been engulfed.

“Reece rebuilt the soccer program and left a legacy. His passion for his players, students, co-workers, community, and his family will never be forgotten.”
Hundreds took to social media to mourn the Zunkers, describing Reece as a mentor and inspiration to generations of young athletes.
