Syrian Man Attacks Passengers with Axe on German Train – Hero Stops Rampage, Four Injured

A man armed with an axe and a hammer attacked passengers on a packed long-distance train in southern Germany, injuring four people before being overpowered by a heroic passenger.

The violent incident took place on Thursday afternoon aboard an ICE express train traveling between Straubing and Plattling, just as Germany’s school holidays began. The train was carrying around 500 people at the time.

Eyewitnesses report that the attacker began his rampage with both weapons in hand, causing panic onboard. One brave passenger managed to tackle the assailant and disarm him, potentially preventing further injuries.

Emergency services responded swiftly after passengers pulled the train’s emergency brake, bringing it to a stop on open tracks. Police, firefighters, and medical teams arrived quickly, and the suspect was taken into custody. His identity and motive have not yet been disclosed.

A spokesperson for the Bavarian Red Cross, Sohrab Taheri-Sohi, said:

“As a result of a violent incident on an ICE train, a major emergency service and disaster control operation was initiated. One person suffered serious injuries, three others were moderately injured, and another was slightly injured.”

The German train operator Deutsche Bahn also issued a statement:

“Our thoughts and sympathy are with the injured and all those who now have to come to terms with what they have experienced. We wish all those affected a speedy and full recovery.”

Authorities have not confirmed whether the attack is being treated as terrorism, and investigations are ongoing. The railway line was temporarily closed while emergency crews secured the scene and attended to the victims.
