Shooter at UW–Platteville: The Silence in the Face of Tragedy

This is what numb looks like. As of now, there are reports of an active shooter situation at the University of Wisconsin–Platteville, with 2-3 fatalities confirmed. And yet, shockingly, thi
event hasn’t been picked up by any reputable news sources on here, aside from the usual tabloid accounts.
In a world where news spreads faster than ever, where social media can make us aware of world-changing events within minutes, why is it that such an alarming and tragic situation seems to be slipping through the cracks? When something as horrific as this happens, it’s not just about the immediate impact—it’s about the broader conversation, the acknowledgment, the accountability.
We are left with this unsettling silence from major outlets. It’s as if the tragedy has become just another story waiting to be reported rather than the lives that have been lost, the families affected, and the fear that’s permeating the campus.
To those affected—victims, families, and friends—the world needs to hear you. Your story matters, and so does your grief. And as witnesses, we must ensure that this silence is broken, not just by sensationalism, but by the humanity that should always be at the core of every tragedy we face.
We cannot become numb to these events. Silence is complicity. It’s time for the real story to be told.
