Japan: Evacuation order issued to 1.9 million residents due to typhoon storm

Typhoon Dujuan is battering Japan’s capital with intense winds and torrential rain, with forecasters warning of potentially record‑breaking rainfall.

Official response and confirmed impact

Evacuation orders have been issued to more than 1.9 million residents across six prefectures, and around 50,000 homes have lost power as the storm continues its path.

In Kanagawa prefecture, a woman is feared to have been buried alive when a landslide destroyed a home in Yokosuka.

Meanwhile, in Sodegaura, Chiba, a man was taken to hospital after being injured while clearing storm debris.

Around 300 flights have been cancelled and several rail services suspended, while Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has postponed her planned visit to the United States.

Typhoon Dujuan is unleashing sustained winds of 130 km/h, with powerful gusts reaching up to 194 km/h.

The storm is the newest in a succession of Pacific weather systems intensified by this year’s “super El Niño”, which has warmed ocean waters and fuelled stronger, more frequent storms.
