Stayton, Oregon man arrested after shooting; victim hospitalized

A 48-year-old Stayton man was arrested early Saturday after a shooting Friday evening near Fifth Avenue and Santiam Street, police said. Dispatchers received a 911 call reporting an altercation at about 5:35 p.m. Sept. 18.

The call was upgraded to shots fired one minute later, and officers arrived at 5:37 p.m., immediately requesting medical aid. An adult male victim was taken by ambulance to a hospital with a gunshot wound.

Police did not release his condition. The suspects had left before officers arrived. Investigators later identified and located a vehicle of interest, then worked with several local agencies to develop two suspects.

Police detained one person of interest at 12:17 a.m. Saturday but later released that individual. At 3:29 a.m., officers took Scott Poindexter, 48, into custody.

Poindexter is charged with first-degree assault, unlawful use of a firearm and recklessly endangering another person. Police said there are no outstanding suspects. The case has been referred to the Marion County District Attorney’s Office.

Poindexter is expected to be arraigned at the Marion County Criminal Court Annex in Salem.
