Atlanta, Georgia measles outbreak puts under-vaccinated kids at risk

Measles is extremely contagious and the virus can linger in the air for up to a couple hours.

Every one person with measles can infect an average of 15 people and the risk goes up if people are unvaccinated. Sher Gardner is an Atlanta-area pediatrician.

She says families with under-vaccinated kids may be able to request a measles vaccine from their doctor for children as young as 6 months old.

The vaccine is the same given to kids as part of the typical two-dose set, first at around 12 months old and then between 4 and 6 years old.
