Delta Flight DL45 From Dublin to New York Returns After Medical Emergency Over Atlantic

A Delta Air Lines flight from Dublin to New York-JFK was forced to turn back over the Atlantic after declaring an in-flight emergency around 90 minutes into the journey.

Flight DL45 departed Dublin Airport at about 1:15 p.m. Tuesday and climbed to approximately 35,000 feet while heading toward New York.

The Boeing 767-300ER later transmitted squawk code 7700, the general emergency code used by aircraft, before making a sharp U-turn back toward Ireland.

Air traffic control gave the aircraft priority to return to Dublin, where emergency crews were placed on standby ahead of its landing at around 4:15 p.m.

Delta said the diversion was caused by a medical situation involving a passenger.

The airline thanked the crew for their professionalism and passengers for their understanding.
