Prosecution Launched After Toddler Sadie Salt, 2, Choked to Death on Sausage at Hertfordshire Nursery

A health and safety prosecution has been launched nearly six years after two-year-old Sadie Salt died after choking on a sausage at a nursery in Hertfordshire.

Sadie is believed to have choked while eating lunch with around 25 other young children at Mini Learners in Radlett on November 12, 2020.

She was taken to hospital but died two days later.

Hertsmere Borough Council said that following a full and thorough investigation, it has now authorised a prosecution under health and safety laws.

Sadie’s parents, Zoe and Adam, said they were grateful for the council’s investigation and stressed that the legal process should now be allowed to run its course.

An inquest into Sadie’s death was opened and adjourned in 2022.

Since her death, her parents have campaigned for nurseries to avoid serving higher-risk foods such as sausages and grapes to children under five.
