St Helens secondary school forced to close after power outage affects wider area

A ST HELENS secondary school has been forced to close today after a power outage.

In a message sent to families, De La Salle School in Eccleston said it had "no choice" but to shut because the loss of power was affecting the school and the wider local area.

Headteacher Andrew Rannard said the situation was "completely beyond our control".

He added that without power, the school was unable to operate safely or provide the necessary facilities for pupils and staff.

Year 10 and Year 11 pupils were due to be sent home first via the Alder Hey Road gate, with younger pupils in Years 7 to 9 then being dismissed in a controlled manner after contacting parents and carers.

In the message to families, Mr Rannard said: "Unfortunately, we have been left with no choice but to close the school today due to a power outage."
