Bob Mackie Dies at 87, Legendary Designer Behind Cher’s Iconic Looks

Legendary fashion and costume designer Bob Mackie, whose dazzling creations helped define Hollywood glamour for generations, has died at the age of 87.

Mackie died Monday in Palm Springs, California, from pneumonia.

Known as the “Sultan of Sequins,” Mackie became famous for designing spectacular costumes for some of entertainment’s biggest stars, including Cher, Carol Burnett, Diana Ross, Tina Turner, Elton John and Barbra Streisand.

His collaboration with Cher became one of the most recognizable partnerships in fashion history, producing elaborate gowns and stage outfits that helped shape the singer’s distinctive image.

Mackie also created the famous curtain dress worn by Carol Burnett in the classic “Went With the Wind!” comedy sketch.

During his decades-long career, Mackie won nine Emmy Awards, earned three Academy Award nominations and received a Tony Award for his costume work on “The Cher Show.”

His influence continued into younger generations, with stars including Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus and Zendaya wearing his designs.

News of Mackie’s death has triggered a sharp increase in online searches as fans and celebrities remember one of Hollywood’s most influential costume designers.
