Anthropic Researcher Jacob Coxon Quits, Warning AI Could “Kill Us All”

Jacob Coxon, a researcher at U.S. artificial intelligence company Anthropic, has resigned publicly over concerns that increasingly powerful AI systems could pose an existential threat to humanity.
Coxon, who previously worked at OpenAI before joining Anthropic, said major AI companies are racing toward self-improving superintelligence without adequate safeguards.
He warned that people working inside the industry genuinely believe advanced AI could eventually kill all humans, arguing that the danger is not merely a marketing claim or distant theoretical concern.
Anthropic alignment researcher Evan Hubinger publicly backed the seriousness of the warning, saying he personally believes there is a greater than 10% chance that AI could cause human extinction within the next decade.
Coxon said he resigned because he believes Anthropic and other leading AI companies are not moving responsibly enough to address the risks created by increasingly capable systems.
Anthropic has said it takes advanced AI risks seriously and argues that its safety research is intended to reduce the possibility of catastrophic outcomes as the technology develops.
