Magnitude 5.2 Earthquake Strikes Off Coast of Vanuatu Islands

Port Vila, September 13 (QNA) – An earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale, struck on Sunday off the coast of Vanuatu Islands in the Pacific Ocean.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said that the epicenter of the quake occurred at a depth of 135.1آ kilometers, 43 kilometers southeast of Port Orly.

In December, an earthquake measuring 7.4آ on the Richter scale struck Port Vila, the capital of Vanuatu, killing 14 persons and damaging commercial buildings, embassies, and a hospital.

Vanuatu, a volcanic archipelago in the South Pacific, lies along the "Ring of Fire," where tectonic plates meet and friction between them causes seismic activity. (QNA)
