MAUI’S, Hawaii — Hurricane Lowell hit the westernmost islands of Hawaii Tuesday morning, triggering the state's first-ever tornado watch that included the two westernmost islands.

At least one person is dead after Hurricane Lowell hit Hawaii late on Monday night into early Tuesday morning.

Hawaii Gov. Josh Green said a homeless man on Oahu was sleeping in a tent when a tree fell down on it.

Lowell was the strongest hurricane to hit the main Hawaiian Islands since Category 4 Hurricane Iniki hit back on Sept. 11, 1992.

Lowell followed a very similar path to Iniki, with a sharp north turn bringing major impacts to the far western parts of the Hawaiian island chain.
