The ground shook across parts of Assam on Tuesday morning.

A 4.1-magnitude earthquake struck the region at 9:57 am IST on September 8, 2026, according to India's National Centre for Seismology (NCS).

This gigantic event generates stress under the earth's surface. The stress may not build slowly and steadily.

Rocks, however, may remain clamped together on faults for a while.

If the stress sum is greater than the strength of the rocks holding them together, rocks can suddenly slip.

Earthquake location and depth

The epicentre was in Goalpara, Assam. It was located around 81 kilometres west-southwest of Guwahati. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres.

Assam is located in the most seismically active part in India. The Indian Plate is still driving towards Asia, thus influencing the Northeast.
