Man arrested for damaging MSP patrol vehicle with hammer
MICHIGAN STATE, Michigan — CHIPPEWA COUNTY, Mich. (WZMQ) – Michigan State Police (MSP) troopers have arrested a man who damaged a patrol vehicle with a hammer while aboard the Sugar Island Ferry.
Arrest and charges
On September 7, a trooper from the Sault Ste. Marie Post was responding to an emergency 911 call from Sugar Island.
The trooper received information regarding a driving complaint on Sugar Island. The trooper boarded the Sugar Island Ferry to travel to the mainland.
The vehicle involved in the driving complaint boarded the ferry behind the trooper.
While the ferry was en route to the mainland, an adult male exited the vehicle and began hitting the MSP patrol vehicle with a hammer.
The trooper exited the patrol vehicle to arrest the man, who resisted and assaulted the trooper while being taken into custody.
Charges and court proceedings
Following further investigation, the man was charged with operating under the influence of drugs, resisting and obstructing a police officer, and assaulting a police officer.
He was also charged with malicious destruction of a police vehicle. The man was lodged in the Chippewa County Jail. The investigation remains ongoing.
