Update: Flight Recorders Recovered From Amazon Cargo Plane After Deadly Miami Crash

Investigators have recovered the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder from the Amazon Prime Air cargo plane that crashed after overrunning a runway at Miami International Airport, the National Transportation Safety Board said Monday.

The recorders could provide crucial information about the Boeing 767’s speed, systems and cockpit communications during the final moments of its landing.

Plane Traveled 1,300 Feet Beyond Paved Surface

The NTSB said the aircraft traveled approximately 1,300 feet beyond the paved runway surface before striking vehicles near the airport.

Investigators said the plane first hit a van carrying seven people and then collided with a Toyota traveling on a nearby road.

The aircraft was arriving from Puerto Rico and was completing its third flight of the day when it overran the runway.

Recovery Operations Continue

The NTSB has begun collecting investigative data but said it will not release its findings until the information has been verified.

Officials reported that fuel remains throughout the crash site and must be removed from the aircraft as recovery operations continue.

Five people were killed and five others were hospitalized following the crash, including three in critical condition. The cause of the runway overrun remains under investigation.
