Maricopa man arrested in South Dakota after allegedly abducting Wyoming teen

MARICOPA, Arizona — MARICOPA, AZ (AZFamily) — A Maricopa man is behind bars after allegedly abducting a 15-year-old girl from Wyoming and driving her hundreds of miles before license plate reader cameras helped authorities track him down in South Dakota last week.

Arrest and charges

Dalton Renollet, 36, was arrested Aug.

31 on a charge of sexual contact with a minor in rural Aurora County, South Dakota, according to South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley.

Prosecutors say Wyoming authorities were initially coordinating with police in Utah, believing Renollet was heading back to Arizona with the 15-year-old girl he abducted from Sundance, Wyoming, in the state’s northeastern corner.

Instead, license plate reader technology detected his vehicle in southwestern South Dakota, east of the city of Plankinton.

South Dakota Highway Patrol troopers stopped Renollet’s car on I-90 near the Aurora County line less than an hour after authorities were first alerted.

“A 15-year-old abducted and traumatized girl has been brought to safety by the excellent work of law enforcement,” Jackley said in a written statement.

“This incident demonstrates how valuable technology can be in protecting the public and assisting officers to locate a vulnerable juvenile and bring her to safety within an hour.”
