JetBlue Pilot Declares Emergency to Avoid Severe Thunderstorm

A JetBlue pilot declared an emergency after questioning an air traffic control heading that appeared to direct Flight B61971 toward a severe thunderstorm.

The Airbus A320 was flying from Fort Lauderdale to Austin on September 3 when the tense exchange with air traffic control occurred.

After receiving the heading, a crew member asked the controller: “So you’re gonna make us go through a, uh, severe thunderstorm?”

The captain then declared an emergency and announced that the aircraft was turning left to a heading of 260 for severe weather avoidance.

Declaring the emergency allowed the JetBlue crew to immediately change course and maintain a safer distance from the dangerous weather.
