Captain and Seven Crew Members Arrested After Deadly Cyprus Ferry Disaster

Authorities in northern Cyprus have arrested the captain and seven crew members of the passenger ferry that capsized off Kyrenia, as investigators examine the cause of the deadly maritime disaster.

The ferry was carrying 267 passengers and crew from Kyrenia to Taşucu, Turkey, when it began taking on water shortly after departure and overturned off the coast.

Latest local reports put the death toll at eight, with 17 people still missing. More than 230 people were rescued as coast guard vessels, helicopters and private boats continued search operations.

Investigation Underway

The captain and seven crew members were detained as part of the investigation. Authorities have not yet announced the cause of the sinking and said any possible negligence would be examined.

Search teams continued working to locate those still missing as families awaited further information.
