Newport, Rhode Island police to speak about shooting that involved officer

NEWPORT, Rhode Island — Newport police said Wednesday that they would hold a news conference at noon regarding a shooting that involved a police officer.

A public safety notice from the city said officers responded to a report of a stolen boat in Newport Harbor on Wednesday morning.

A heavy police presence was visible in the Point neighborhood near Storer Park and Elm Street Pier. Traffic was being detoured.

Rhode Island State Police and the state attorney general's office said in statements that they were helping Newport police with an investigation.
