Video: Pomas, France Tornado Leaves Village Evacuated, 300 Homes Damaged and 39 Injured

POMAS, France — New video shows the powerful tornado that tore through Pomas in southwestern France, where authorities say 39 people were injured and about 300 homes were damaged.

The tornado struck at around 5:20 p.m. local time Monday, August 24, south of Carcassonne in the Aude department.

Entire Village Evacuated

Residents of Pomas were evacuated while authorities inspected damaged buildings to determine whether they were safe to enter.

About 100 of the roughly 300 damaged homes may no longer be safe to live in, according to the latest assessment.

Tornado Causes Extensive Damage

The tornado ripped roofs from homes, damaged walls, uprooted trees and destroyed vehicles as it moved through the village.

Météo-France said the tornado was particularly intense, with estimated winds potentially exceeding 200 km/h.

Emergency crews continued inspecting damaged buildings Tuesday, while temporary accommodation was opened for residents unable to return home.
