PORT CHARLOTTE — The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office responded to a reported threat at Port Charlotte High School around 1:45 p.m. Wednesday.The school had performed its first lockdown drill of the year.

Shortly after, deputies responded to a threat, placing the school on official lockdown.Aaliayah Gil, a sophomore at PCHS, said the alarms continued to blare after the lockdown training, and students assumed it was still a part of the drill.“Three cops came to the classroom and told us it was not a drill,” Gil said.She said the class pulled down the blinds and remained inside for an hour.

Gil said there were reports that a student brought a weapon onto campus.“All we know is the cops were looking for a kid,” Gil said.Gil wishes the lockdown was taken more seriously.“Kids were still messing around and throwing their drinks,” Gil said.CCSO reported at 2:08 p.m. that deputies on scene searched the building and found no active threat.Families gathered at the front entrance of the school to pick up their kids around 2:10 p.m.
