Magnitude 5.6 Earthquake Strikes South of Teluk Dalam, Indonesia

A magnitude 5.6 earthquake struck off Indonesia’s South Nias Regency at 1:02 p.m. local time on Tuesday, August 18.

The U.S. Geological Survey placed the epicenter about 154 kilometers south-southeast of Teluk Dalam at a depth of 10 kilometers.

BMKG Reports Stronger Magnitude

Indonesia’s meteorological agency, BMKG, measured the earthquake at magnitude 6.1 and a depth of 29 kilometers. It located the epicenter about 147 kilometers southeast of South Nias.

Magnitude and depth estimates can differ between monitoring agencies and may be revised as additional data is analyzed.

No Tsunami Threat

BMKG said the earthquake did not pose a tsunami threat.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or significant damage.
