Swift-water rescue teams are using boats to reach people affected by rapidly rising floodwaters across Harrison County, West Virginia, as powerful thunderstorms move through the Appalachian region.
The emergency response marks a major escalation after flash flood warnings were issued for Clarksburg and surrounding communities Monday afternoon.
Heavy Rain Triggers Dangerous Flooding
Repeated lines of severe thunderstorms have produced heavy rainfall across northern West Virginia, flooding roads, streams and low-lying areas.
Clarksburg, Bridgeport, Shinnston, Stonewood, Nutter Fort, Anmoore and nearby communities are among the locations threatened by flash flooding.
Sections of Interstate 79 and U.S. Route 50 are also within the warned area.
Residents Urged to Avoid Flooded Roads
Authorities are urging residents to stay away from flooded streets and never attempt to drive through moving water.
