A powerful magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck Northern Sumatra, Indonesia, on Saturday, adding to a series of significant earthquakes affecting the country.

The earthquake occurred at approximately 10:54 UTC, with its epicenter near Pematangsiantar in North Sumatra. The quake was recorded at a depth of about 99 kilometers.

The earthquake was potentially felt across a wide area of Sumatra and surrounding regions.

Indonesia’s BMKG initially reported the event at magnitude 6.4 and a depth of 163 kilometers, locating the epicenter on land about 20 kilometers southeast of Simalungun.
