Tropical Storm Lala Threatens Hawaii as Hurricane Watch Issued for Big Island

Tropical Storm Lala has formed in the Central Pacific and could strengthen near hurricane intensity before approaching Hawaii, prompting officials to issue a Hurricane Watch for the Big Island.

Tropical Storm Lala’s Current Location

Lala was located approximately 700 miles east-southeast of Hawaii early Thursday, with maximum sustained winds of 40 mph.

The storm was moving west at about 10 mph and is expected to continue toward the Hawaiian Islands through the weekend.

Hurricane Watch Issued for the Big Island

A Hurricane Watch means hurricane conditions are possible, generally within 48 hours before the anticipated arrival of tropical-storm-force winds.

Although the forecast center of Lala could pass near or south of the Big Island, dangerous conditions may extend far outside the official forecast cone.

Heavy Rain and Flooding Threat

Rain associated with Lala could begin affecting Hawaii late Friday. Forecast totals range from 5 to 10 inches across the islands, with isolated amounts reaching 20 inches.

The heavy rainfall could cause flash flooding, mudslides and dangerous travel conditions, particularly in mountainous and flood-prone areas.

Strong Winds and Dangerous Surf Expected

The Big Island could experience damaging winds, large waves and life-threatening surf as Lala approaches this weekend.
