Iowa Severe Thunderstorm Watch: 75 MPH Winds and Tornadoes Possible Until 11 AM

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect across much of central and eastern Iowa until 11 a.m. CDT Thursday as a powerful bow echo races east across the state.

The main threats include scattered damaging winds, with isolated gusts reaching 75 mph, quarter-size hail up to one inch in diameter and the possibility of one or two tornadoes.

The watch area includes Des Moines, Fort Dodge, Waterloo, Marshalltown, Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Davenport, Ottumwa and surrounding communities.

Strong winds could damage roofs, down trees and power lines, and cause widespread power outages. The fast-moving storms may also create dangerous travel conditions during the morning.

A watch means conditions are favorable for severe thunderstorms. Residents should remain alert and be prepared to seek shelter immediately if a Severe Thunderstorm Warning or Tornado Warning is issued.
