USGS reports no immediate tsunami threat after quake hits 258 km WNW of Sabang
A powerful earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.5 struck off the coast of Indonesia on Sunday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS)
The quake occurred approximately 258 kilometers west-northwest of Sabang, a city on the northern tip of Indonesia’s Sumatra island. It hit at a depth of 10 kilometers beneath the seabed.
There have been no immediate reports of injuries or damage, and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has not issued a tsunami alert in connection with the tremor.
Indonesia sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” where tectonic plates frequently collide, making it one of the most earthquake-prone nations in the world.
Authorities are monitoring the situation for aftershocks and potential impacts in nearby coastal regions. Residents in the area are urged to remain calm and follow any guidance issued by local disaster management agencies.
