Traverse City Walmart stabbing

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. – Eighteen hours after a brutal stabbing attack at a Walmart in Traverse City, authorities have yet to release the name of the suspect responsible for injuring at least 11 people.

The violent incident took place just before 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 26, when a man began randomly stabbing shoppers inside the busy store. Police say the attacker was quickly subdued thanks to fast-acting bystanders and responding officers.

As of Sunday morning at 9 a.m., Munson Medical Center reported that all 11 victims are showing “encouraging signs of recovery.” Seven individuals are now listed in fair condition, while four remain in serious but no longer critical condition.

“Their unwavering commitment and compassion are a testament to the strength and resilience of our healthcare community,” said Munson Healthcare in a statement. The hospital also confirmed that emotional support is being provided to staff impacted by the tragedy.

One witness, Angela Helfrich, who was shopping with her fiancé, described the chaotic scene:

“It was just very panicky, very scary. I’ve never witnessed anything like that, and I’ve lived in Traverse City my whole life. I was way too close. That could have been me or my family.”

Shoppers reportedly chased the attacker into the parking lot and restrained him until police arrived. However, officials have not clarified how many people helped or exactly how the suspect was stopped.

The Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office said more information would be shared as the investigation progresses.

Despite public pressure and high-profile statements from national figures, the suspect’s name and background remain undisclosed.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer posted on social media:

“Our thoughts are with the victims and the community reeling from this brutal act of violence. I am grateful to the first responders for their swift response.”

Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg also reacted, saying he and his husband Chasten, who is from Traverse City, are “shaken” and praying for a full recovery for those impacted.
