Identified After 50 Years: Mystery Woman Found Dead in New Hampshire Woods Was Nancy Gale Erickson

MARLBOROUGH, NH — After nearly five decades, authorities have finally identified a woman whose body was discovered in a wooded area off Route 124 in Marlborough, New Hampshire in April 1974. The woman has been confirmed as Nancy Gale Erickson, a 21-year-old originally from New York, thanks to recent forensic testing.

Erickson disappeared in the fall of 1973, and investigators long believed she had died around that time. Her remains were found on April 16, 1974, but until now, her identity remained a mystery.

“After years of work on this case, putting a name to Nancy Gale Erickson is incredibly meaningful. It’s more than solving a mystery — it’s restoring her identity and honoring the life she lived,” said Detective Sgt. Kelly LaPointe of the New Hampshire State Police.

Erickson had moved to Tampa, Florida to live with her mother and siblings and was working as a nurse. According to family members, the emotional strain of her work may have contributed to her sudden disappearance. In the months before her death, she had been arrested in Bellows Falls, Vermont for car theft and was last known to be working at the Brattleboro Retreat, a psychiatric facility, before leaving abruptly on October 30, 1973.

Authorities are now focusing on the circumstances surrounding her death, which remain unclear. The New Hampshire Cold Case Unit is seeking information from anyone who may have known Nancy or crossed paths with her during the early 1970s.

• Residents of the Community House in 1973
• Students at Corning Community College (1971–1972)
• Staff at Tampa General Hospital
