Manhunt launched as violent British prisoner escapes Portuguese jail

Police are hunting a violent British inmate who escaped a Portuguese jail – five years after a foiled prison break when he smothered his body in oil to squeeze through bars.

Mark Roscaleer, then 30, made headlines in August 2019 after his his thwarted escape plot at EP Lisbon while he was awaiting trail on robbery and kidnap charges. Four years earlier the Runcorn, Cheshire-born criminal had handed himself in to police in after absconding from HMP Kirkham in Lancashire after nine days on the run during a jail break while he was serving seven years and four months for a terrifying raid on an Ellesmere Port pub in 2012.
Today, Portuguese Prison Service authorises confirmed violent Roscaleer, serving nine years for kidnap and robbery, was one of five men on the run.

They fled a prison in Alcoentre near the Portuguese capital Lisbon around 10am this morning although it is reported to have gone unnoticed until a lunchtime roll-call. Local reports said they used a ladder to scale the 20ft jail wall and were assisted by accomplices who were waiting outside for them in a small black Mercedes.
