Much of the Northern United States has a chance to See Northern Lights

A series of powerful severe geomagnetic storms are expected to hit Earth tonight into Saturday, affecting much of Canada and possibly extending as far south as Alabama and Northern California in the United States.

This follows multiple strong geomagnetic storms produced by our sun since Monday, triggered by a series of solar flares resulting in six separate events heading towards Earth with five more due to hit the Earth over the weekend.

The NOAA Space Weather Center has issued its first G4 (Severe) geomagnetic watch in nearly two decades, the last being in 2005. They forecast a Kp index reaching a mid-level 8, corresponding to a G4 on the G5 rating scale, indicating the potential for a strong to severe geomagnetic storm, the second most intense category, just below an extreme storm.

The storm is anticipated to persist throughout the night and into Saturday night, possibly causing widespread power grid issues, disruption to satellite and radio navigation, and other related problems.
