The suspect, who was identified as 40-year-old Joel Cauchi, appeared to have targeted women in the stabbings at Westfield Bondi Junction Shopping Centre in Australia, according to police.

Five of the six victims that were killed were women, while several others, including a baby, were injured in the Bondi Junction stabbing attack.

The New South Wales police commissioner told Australia’s ABC News that it was “obvious” Cauchi focused on women.

“It’s obvious to me, it’s obvious to detectives that seems to be an area of interest that the offender focused on women and avoided the men.”
