Emergency services responding to plane crash near Bunbury Airport Western in Australia

An emergency response is underway after a light aircraft crashed in Western Australia’s South West.

The private aircraft crashed near Bunbury Airport on Friday afternoon.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services said the crash was reported at 2.45pm AWST, with crews arriving at the crash site at 2.50pm.

Police say the male pilot was trapped in the aircraft after the crash, but was rescued just after 3.10pm.

The person is currently being assessed by St John Ambulance paramedics.

Emergency services remain at the scene, while the state rescue helicopter has also been deployed.

The airport is 8km south-east of the regional city, 170km south of Perth.
